Mark Stevenson and the Givens. "Because Iniquity Shall Abound: Songs Inspired by and Adapted from the Art of Outlaw Jesse Howard."

Jesse Howard was a self-taught artist who lived outside of Fulton, MO and filled his property with signs and constructions which dealt with local and national politics, religion and personal matters. He received national attention and was collected widely in his own lifetime. He died in 1984 at the age of 98.

In the fall of 2000, Kansas City musician and songwriter, Mark Stevenson, walked into an art exhibition containing Howard's work and was inspired to write songs adapting the lyrics from the text of Jesse Howard's signs and setting them to melody.

Tim Finn, music writer for the Kansas City Star, has already praised the work, writing, "the melodies are as arresting as the words are oddly profound." On Saturday, September 10, at 8:30 p.m. Mark Stevenson and the Givens will release their long-anticipated 8-song CD to the public. Admission is five dollars.
