Kansas City, July 15, 2005: It is time again for
"A Day At The Lake," a water ski and water sports clinic for persons
with spinal cord injuries and other mobility challenges. For 11 years a
team of rehabilitation professionals and community volunteers have
joined to provide a summer recreational outing for paralyzed
individuals. Using specially adapted equipment individuals whose bodies
are paralyzed experience newfound physical independence and freedom on
the water.
The smiles and shouts of jubilation are endless
when a participant who is a quadriplegic experiences their first time
skiing. “Once they have done it, they cannot wait to get out there
again, says event director Renee Hughes. The event is about promoting
wellness – physical and mental, says Hughes. “It’s also about building
confidence, making friendships and demonstrating how outdoor recreation
can be accessible.”
Sponsored by the Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas
City and the Kansas City wheelchair Bowling Association, this year’s
event will take place on Friday, July 15th from 9:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. at Crow’s Creek Landing, Smithville Lake. This free event is
open to individuals 16 years or older who have experienced a spinal cord
injury, spina bifida or other disabling conditions. To assure that all
special needs can be accommodated, advanced registration is required
before July 1. For additional information or to register, call (816)
751-7815.
